It’s time to get up, but the day ahead feels so overwhelming, you don’t want to get out of bed. The process of getting ready or driving to work makes your heart beat so quickly, you feel like you’re dying. You’ve called in so often, you worry about what your co-workers will think, or how you’ll manage if you lose your job. You think no one understands, and their attempts to help only make you feel worse about yourself. This is anxiety, and you don’t have to live like this.

My name is Kara Ashley-Gilmore, and I provide counseling for anxiety and stress-management in Hendersonville, NC. Anxiety changes your perception of the world around you. I use a combination of cognitive-behavioral, expressive arts, somatic, and mindfulness-based therapies to help you learn panic and stress-management skills, change unhelpful thinking patterns, and heal from any past traumas which are contributing to your anxiety symptoms.

You’re not broken or crazy if you’re experiencing these symptoms. Anxiety is a normal response to your body’s experience of stress. Sometimes this stress is real and right in front of you, and sometimes it’s imagined–either memories of something in the past or thoughts of something you fear may happen in the future. Your body may react the same regardless of the source, so one of our first tasks will be practicing ways to stay in the present moment.

When you experience stress, anxiety tricks you into using methods that maintain your symptoms.
