Wellness Wednesday: Small ways to incorporate self-care into our days
Set an Affirmation
Have you ever overheard an argument between a couple and thought, “I would never let my significant other talk to me that way!”? Or maybe you cringed when you witnessed a parent use shame to discipline their child? If we would not want someone else to treat us this way, if we would never treat a friend this way–name calling, shaming, cursing, ignoring–why do we talk to ourselves this way? Our inner voice can be really harsh. Remember the golden rule? What if we changed it around a bit?
Do unto yourself as you would have others do unto you
We need to treat ourselves with kindness, trusting that we are worthy of the same love, respect, and patience that we give to our friends, co-workers, partners, children, and customers. And it starts with the way we talk to ourselves and the things we think about ourselves.
What do you want to tell yourself today? What do you need to remind yourself of?
- I am worthy.
- I am loved.
- I can do hard things.
- I am safe.
- I am…
- I can…
Write it on a post-it. Write it over and over again on a sheet of paper. Draw it. Paint it. Think it. Say it. Do whatever you need to do, as often as you need to do it until you believe it.
